Charles Sweeney has written for leaders at the highest levels of business, government, and the nonprofit world for audiences ranging from coal miners and steel workers at Labor Day picnics to the elite financial press and industry professionals. Over one billion people heard his contribution to the Athens 2004 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. He has written hundreds of speeches, scripted and co-produced media programming, ghost written book chapters, co-written a TED talk, and drafted numerous reports and investor relations communications.
From 2014 through 2017, Charles served at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission where he wrote speeches for three Chairs before joining the internal communications team. There, he developed communications strategies, conceived, co-produced and scripted videos, and scripted the agency’s annual event on financial market regulation.
At TSD, Charles has worked for clients including: Athens 2004 Olympic Committee Chairman Gianna Angelopolous; Center for American Progress Chairman John D. Podesta; Ramani Ayer, CEO of The Hartford; ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero; and, Teresa Heinz-Kerry and Jeffrey Lewis of the Heinz Family Foundation. Charles also worked as speechwriter for Commerce Secretary Ronald H. Brown and U.S. Senators Jay Rockefeller and Barbara Mikulski.
Charles is a 1986 graduate of The George Washington University, where he studied political science and economics. He has two children, Dylan and Nora.
